Chris Johanson Click to Enlarge

Chris Johanson lives and works in Portland, Oregon, though he made a name for himself as one of the preeminent Mission School artists in San Francisco in the late ‘90s and early 2000s. He achieved art-world fame for his ingenious and deeply affecting installation at the 2002 Whitney Biennial, a childlike, multi-layered cosmogony of life which he constructed in the museum’s four-storey stairwell. His rudimentary visual style is coupled with a penetrating gaze into human nature.
