EARTH BY is a one-of-a-kind art project that has been a regular feature in PLANET since our inception. The concept is a simple one: invite notable contemporary artists to create art pieces that portray their personal artistic interpretation of Earth. The results have been spectacular: unique images that exhibit the imaginative vision of today’s artists and the vast range of forms, motifs, and complex human sentiment that our planet can inspire. This is especially noteworthy during our era of unprecedented awareness about the world and human civilization’s impact on it.
Over the years, EARTH BY pieces have been contributed by well-known artists such as Chris Johanson, Chinatsu Ban, Peter Beard, Aurel Schmidt, Hisham Bharoocha, Ryan McGinness, Wangechi Mutu, Chris Duncan, Andy Gilmore, Chris Scarborough, and many others. And we look forward to publishing many more....
Although envisioned as a celebration of our world, this is not a simplistic feel-good feature, but a wide-open platform for some of today’s most talented contemporary artists to explore their personal feelings about our planet, embracing the full spectrum of possible reflections and commentaries through their visual art.
As the only project of its kind, we’re excited to give it a fully dedicated presence on our website, which will now allow many more people to access and view the art. In collaboration with the artists, we’re also giving our readers the opportunity to acquire the EARTH BY pieces — as original artwork and in limited editions — exclusively through PLANET. Each month, we’ll introduce a new EARTH BY and release one from our archives.
In the spirit of the project, ten percent of all proceeds are donated to our two favorite organizations working to make the world a better place: Charity: Water, which provides safe and clean drinking water to thousands of people in developing nations, and 350.org, a non-profit dedicated to raising awareness about climate change and inspiring communities and governments to take action.
By collecting your favorite pieces, you can participate in creating a spectacular and unique art document for our time. In addition, you’ll be supporting the artists and helping our two charitable partners make a difference – all while developing your own art collection with works by some of today’s most sought-after artists.
